MANILA's storm signal number 3 has been lifted in several provinces still rolling from Super Typhoon Rollie, the metropolitan area and some other areas as the Ulysses weather system intensified in the typhoon and headed toward Quezon and Aurora, the state's weather office said Wednesday.
The 21st storm in the country this year, which occurred a few days after a superstorm hit the Bicol region, was last estimated at 100 kilometers north of Virac, Catanduanes, at 10 a.m.
It was observed to be moving from west to northwest at 20km/h, with a maximum wind speed of 125km/h near the center and gusts of up to 155km/h, according to the latest PAGASA weather report.
Ulysses is projected to land between Wednesday and Thursday night on the islands of Polllo and Quezon Mainland, cross the center of Luzon and appear on the west coast of Zambales on Thursday, according to PAGASA.
The fifth storm since October: Typhoon strikes in the provinces of Ulises.
It may weaken slightly as it crosses the continent of Luzon due to the "friction effect in the presence" of the Sierra Madre and Zambales mountain ranges, but it is likely to remain a typhoon, PAGASA added.
On Wednesday, heavy rains will prevail over Camarín Norte, Camarín Sur and Catanduanes, while moderate and occasional heavy rains will occur in Albei, Sorsogon, Quezón, including the Polygon Islands, as well as Burias and Ticao.
The Manila Metro and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will experience light and moderate, and sometimes heavy, rains, reports PAGASA.
It warned that flooding, rain-induced landslides and sedimentary flows (e.g. lahar) may occur during heavy or prolonged rains, especially in areas highly exposed to such hazards and in areas where heavy rains have been recorded in the past.
Areas prone to the winds of Tropical Cyclone No. 3 include the Catandues and other parts of Bicola previously devastated by Super Typhoon Rolley. Thousands of people have been displaced there, and homes and critical infrastructure are in ruins.
