The suspect, Rico Marley, 22, was charged with reckless conduct and taken to the Fulton County Jail for further processing, police said.
Officers responded to the Publix Supermarket at 1380 Atlantic Dr. NW around 1:34 p.m. in reference to an "armed person."
Police said a witness saw the suspect and alerted store management, who then called police.
Officers saw the man come out of the bathroom and detained him for questioning. Police said paramedics were on the scene conducting a mental health assessment of the suspect.
Police evacuated the store to clear the area of possible threats.
Atlantic Drive, the main street in front of the store, was closed to traffic. Shoppers were turned away as they approached the grocery store, but there were still plenty of people in the outdoor mall.
"Right now I'm trying to get my store back to where it needs to be," the store manager said when asked for comment . "It's fine. Everything is fine. Nothing happened in the store."
Two of the suspect's long guns, three handguns and a bulletproof vest found during the investigation will be placed into evidence by police, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
The scene comes just two days after a gunman walked into a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, and killed 10 people. It also follows another shooting on March 16 that left eight dead at three Atlanta massage parlors.
